Gemina
by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

Review:
How many ways did I love this book? ALL THE WAYS.

I mean, I’m not even sure that sentence makes sense, that’s how difficult it is to find my words. I thought Illuminae was fantastic, and was a little worried this would fall into the sophomore slump, but nope! It was a great read from start to finish, building momentum and crescendo, with twists I did not see coming AT ALL.

Did I have some issues with it? Yes, I did. But that gripe is nothing that can be changed now, and it is a personal choice. I still loved the story, from start to finish. I still loved the way the characters were crafted and the way they grew. I still loved the banter, and of course, the format.

Oh, I love the format of this series. It is something so different. And I was a little worried that the novelty would have faded after the first novel, but nope. There were slight differences in this to the first, and boy, did they work well with the individual characteristics of these new characters.

And without giving too much away, the way it was connected to the first novel was fantastic. I cannot wait to read the conclusion, because I’ve got so many questions that still need to be answered. And yet, I was not left unsatisfied at the end of this novel. That is the mark of a good story, in my humble opinion.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.
