SPOTLIGHT; #DesiRepDiscussions

We interrupt our regular schedule to bring you this post.

I spoke about it on Wednesday, but a little bit more in-depth today!

#DesiRepDiscussions can be found on Pragati @ The InkedIn Book Blog and Aditi @ A Thousand Words A Million Books‘ blogs. It is a series of guest posts by desi book bloggers about representation – or the lack there of – of desis in mass Western media.

They put it best:

The purpose of this discussion event is to make others aware of the lush, beautiful desi culture and to tell them more about us.

The movement in the online book community towards more diverse and #ownvoices books has been quite great, and I have been thrilled to stumble across desi authors and their novels both on Twitter and on GoodReads. To hear from the desi book community has been a treat as well, and there are many things I am hoping to see more of in the future in regards to the treatment of desi characters.

I would definitely suggest everyone go and read the posts up on Prags and Aditi’s blogs, because they are both inspiring and thought-provoking.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.

I am looking forward to seeing this feature more in the future! Yrs, #OwnVoices is really helping a lot of people find their representation in literature and that is so impressive! I’m glad more people are feeling more connected and valued in what they are reading ^^
