Handle With Care

handle with care; the austen edition

bookworm things

There are some Austen novels I haven’t seen adaptations of, or even straight to screen adaptations, because for some reason, the story does not catch me. And then there are some, I might not have read or watched, or know much about that I read crossover fanfiction for.

handle with care

Yes, I do read Austen fanfiction. Mostly centered on Mary Bennet, or based on the wesberies adaptations I’ve watched.

We have established I am a nerd, yes?

  • Emma is a fun story, in so far as I know it. I haven’t read the source material, but I have enjoyed Clueless tremendously and Emma Approved was also fun. (And apparently it’s coming back for more episodes, which I am tentatively excited about!
  • I’m unsure whether Mansfield Park has been adapted other than the one webseries I’ve heard about, but there is one fanfiction that crosses over with Pride & PrejudiceThe Odd Duck’s Quest by Sempre libre – that I reread on an almost montly basis.
  • There’s something about Sense & Sensibility that I think would make for a really good modern adaptation, but I haven’t seen any anywhere yet. It’d have to be handled a little well, I think, because sisterly relationships can be done pretty shallowly, and I feel like this is an important part of the story.

Again, I don’t know all of these stories well, so I could be wrong, and if I am, feel free to tell me so! I love to learn as much as I can about Austen’s works, and any and all adaptations.

I am embarrassed to say I’ve only read Pride and Prejudice. Oops! It’s brilliant, though, so I should certainly read other works of Austen.

There was a 2011 modern film adaption of Sence and Sensibility called Scents and Sensibility. It focuses on a Ponzi scheme and is honestly… not very good. I wonder if that’s why no one has done an adaption since?! XD

I’ve only read P&P too! I’ve started Persuasion, but I haven’t finished it yet because I got distracted.

Lol! Maybe that’s why. I know a Hindi serial attempted to adapt S&S but like, too much drama. Way too much drama.

I mean, it’s no small undertaking to make an Austen adaption. With the internet as a “marketing tool” for films and TV through word of mouth, a team really needs to commit to make a great Austen retelling or, well, it will get thrown in the garbage by the world. O_o We’re brutal.

We really are. Lol. There’s apparently a Persuasion webseries in the works by a group of people I follow on YouTube that I’m super excited about.

Your posts reminded me why I should be re-reading these classics again. I loved S & S when I re-read it recently. I am sure I will love them all right? I should give it a try and a hard pass to the fan fictions, sorry. Great post.

According to a couple of my friends, they love Persuasion and Northanger Abbey whenever they reread them! And aww, I’m a HUGE fanfiction person if only because I write them myself at times. It helps me develop my original content.
