World After
by Susan Ee

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what’s left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels’ secret plans where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

Review:

Things get way more intense in World After. I read most of the book in one sitting, and then put it on hold for a few days because I have not gotten my hands on the last book of the series. But I couldn’t wait anymore to read it.

Penryn continues to be the strong protagonist of the first novel, but the cracks are beginning to show. She’s scared and vulnerable and hurting and worried, and it shows. Ee also delves a little more into what was done to Paige, which horrified me. The poor girl has been through so much, but I am also intrigued as to where the story will take her in the last book. A little sympathy is evoked for Beliel, and then lost. He’s a cruel character, but interesting to read about.

I hope we get more of Dee and Dum in the last book, and of Penryn’s mother. I think the addition of Clara was a good touch for this arc, but I also think her arc was wrapped up nicely, so I hope it’s not dragged out in the next book.

Now, Raffe. RAFFE THE NERD. Can I just say that I love that he recognizes Penryn not by her eyes or her voice but when she kicks an angel in the face? And then proceeds to stab him in the crutch? Because YOUR FAVES COULD NEVER. These two losers fall back into snarking at one another like they were never apart. It is glorious. (Also “Pooky Bear” is now my favourite thing ever.)

I need to get my hands on the last book of the series so I can finish it pronto.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.

I have Angelfall on my shelf and I really need to read it. You’ve been racing through the series and I think that just goes to show how much I am going to love this series!

Thanks! I actually read these books a while back – I still have to read book 3 – but I definitely did love them when I read them!
