;press play (and lets write)

bookworm things

One of the first few posts I planned when I started blogging was Press Play, a post about music and creating playlists in relation to books. This was, oh, sometime last year, and in turned into a post asking for websites I could use to post my playlists on.

Today, I give you part 2 of that post, this time with regards to writing.

It is NaNoWriMo, after all, and even if I’ve fallen WAY behind on my word count, I can still talk about making playlists for my projects, right? Right.

press play and lets write

As mentioned in my last blog post, I am attempting to work on four projects. From these four, only one has a playlist I have already formed, though it’s been a while since I’ve listened to it. Most of the songs on this playlist are Hindi, since it was initially based on an Indian serial I used to watch. I still listen to the soundtrack of the serial on YouTube when I write the story!

Songs that go on writing playlists can be mood songs, songs that remind you of the theme of the story, songs that remind you of the characters*, songs that remind you of the relationships in the story, etcetra, etcetra.

*NOTE: character playlists can be subsets of writing playlists too!

For me, personally, I put in a lot of thematic songs and relationship songs. Because, well, I like music, and it helps me get my head back into the story if I remember the emotions behind the story.

Many times the lyrics do not match the story, and that’s okay! Or if you want to go looking for songs where lyrics match your story or your character’s arc, that’s okay too! Whatever works for you.*

*If writing in silence works for you, that’s okay too!

My general writing playlist consists of a lot of The Civil War and a lot of SafetySuit because their music isn’t too loud and usually reflects the emotions behind my stories. On days when I need to write A LOT, I usually go to the Hamilton soundtrack because it adds a sense of urgency to my typing that has helped me reach my word counts and deadlines.

I’m currently attempting to build Spotify playlists for my projects to help me finish up at least one draft of something this year. Would anyone be interested in listening to them?
