;seven 2019 books I cannot wait for

bookworm things

This list is full of books that I am SUPER EXCITED ABOUT 2019 CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH. Also the likelihood of me splurging on all of them is high. Or at the very least, convincing people to get my these books.*

*My 5th anniversary just passed and while my husband has already gotten me gifts – we do a budget thing where we then proceed to buy ourselves stuff – I could probably convince my family to pre-order one or two of these books for me…

#project14lists day 4

I am not going to apologise about the fact that all of these books are diverse and set in Asia or Asian inspired lands. It’s something I never got to have growing up, and I am so glad that this is happening now. My daughter will grow up seeing herself and her friends in the stories she reads. The thought of that just makes me so happy.

  • Descendant Of The Crane by Joan He.
I am on the Street Team for this book! I still can’t believe it. It sounds fantastic, the art Joan has posted on Twitter has been AMAZING, and I am SUPER EXCITED!
  • The Weight Of The Sky by Hanna Alkaf.
This one is particularly close to my heart, because I may not be Malaysian, but I do live here now. And I grew up in Singapore, so I feel like this will resonate with me. Also Hanna lives in my area – she apparently wrote part of the book in the Starbucks near my house? I cry. ~ and I’m lowkey trying to figure out a way to convince her that our kids need to be friends and we need to write together. I mean, what.
  • We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal.
Arabian inpired fantasy. ARABIAN INSPIRED FANTASY. Every thing that Hafsah has posted on Twitter about this has me shaking with anticipation, I cannot wait to get this.
  • There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon.
I love Sandhya Menon’s rom-coms. That is all. (Okay, that is not all. This is a fat Indian girl protagonist, something that is quite close to my heart because I was on the bigger side as a kid, and in desi families, that can be very bad for your self-esteem.)
  • The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi.
Everything about this book makes me excited. And I love Roshani’s writing? So much? I actually initially thought this had come out this year and it just wasn’t in stores locally so I was VERY HAPPY to find out I was wrong and I have something to look forward to when it’s out officially.
  • Blood Heir by Amélie Wen Zhao.
It’s described as a ‘dark Anastasia retelling’, and there’s magic and death and lies and secrets and apparently a con man, which is a thing I love and have only just realised? I cannot wait to read this.
  • The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen.
There is something about this cover that just calls to me. Add that to the fact that the first line (which I saw in a Goodreads review) is apparently “Pa was taking too long to cut the boys’ throats.” and I am SOLD. And Margaret has confirmed that there is no love triangle, which can sometimes be handled well, but with this one, I’m good with slow-burn, thanks.

narnia bookring

There are SO MANY GOOD AND DIVERSE books coming out next year, and I am so excited. My TBR is screaming and my bank balance is going to cry, but I am still so excited.

What are some books you are looking forward to?

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.
