;five tropes that I unashamedly love
This is not the first time I’m writing about tropes. This is not even the first time I am writing about tropes I love. I have yelled – not so extensively, but I’ve YELLED – about this before.*
*See: instant to-read; the tropes edition and handle with care; the tropes edition for proof.
More information and the full #Project14Lists can be found here.
I love these tropes so much, but I will say this though – I would love to see more diverse representation. I’ve seen some, especially recently, but give me more. Give me more of these tropes with protagonists of colour. Give me these tropes with non-straight pairings and characters. Give me these tropes with non-straight protagonists of colour because they do exist, thanks.
- Fake dating/marriage.
I will probably never tire of this trope. In books, in movies or in fanfiction. Heck, even in games, if that’s where it goes. - Marriage of convenience.
REGENCY NOVEL MARRIAGE OF CONVENIENCE FEATURING PROTAGONISTS OF COLOUR, PLEASE AND THANK YOU UNIVERSE. - Best friend’s brother/brother’s best friend.
Either version. Or both versions, whereby the protagonist’s best friend’s brother is also their brother’s best friend. Is that a book yet? - Enemies to friends to lovers.
Um, yes please, especially if you give me something in a desi-inspired setting with family fueds and Bollywood-esque drama. - Childhood friends to lovers.
Add in some misunderstandings, or heck, make it a comedy of errors with literally everybody else knowing they are in love, and I am SOLD.
Yes, I did just regurgitate my list but that’s because I haven’t found many diverse books in these yet, so please recommend ones.
I also now have the urge to write Bollywood-inspired versions of all of these stories, so help, I’m making Spotify playlists for stories I don’t actually have plots to.
What tropes would you never tire of and what books can you recommend to me with them?

I LOVE ALL OF THESE TROPES TOO. not guilty about it at all. They are all what I find in new adult contemporary books.

UGH YES TO FAKE DATING! Also, childhood to lovers hehe
Ara
IT CAN BE DONE IN SO MANY WAYS IT IS GREAT. And it can be done in other genres besides just romance, like please consider plopping fake dating in a fantasy or sci-fi situation? I need it.

Ugh, enemies to lovers will always be a favorite of mine! And really just morally ambiguous and romantically available bad guys in general. It might be cliche, but I still love it!
Ara
Yes! Cliches can always be made fresh when well-written so they’re always good.
