CONTENT CREATION 302: Know Your Audience

Most content creation advice blogs start with this topic. Especially if you plan on monetising your content. However, I’ve been approaching this series as someone who wants to encourage creativity for creativity’s sake.

CONTENT CREATION 101: Commit To What You Create
CONTENT CREATION 102: Find Your Own “Write Drunk, Edit Sober”

CONTENT CREATION 201: Believe In Your Message
CONTENT CREATION 202: Compare Only To Yourself
CONTENT CREATION 203: ‘One Size Fits All’ Does Not Apply

CONTENT CREATION 301: Burnout Happens

The thing is, it’s not always feasible to create content for creativity’s sake. I know that well. Sometimes you need to create because of other reasons. Which is why it is necessary for you to know who you are trying to target with your content.

Is it a niche you are trying to fill? Is it a joke you are trying to make (and if it is, who are you aiming at, because different people have different approaches to humour)?

Is it a message you are aiming at the world?

These are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself. Once you know what you are trying to do, it’s easier to narrow down who you are trying to attract.

And then you can tailor your content for them.

Oh, it’s still a lot of work. It can take some time to figure it all out. But in order to get engagement with your content, it is important to do it.

By knowing your audience, you can create the best possible content to get their attention.

So take a look at what you want to create and who you want to create it for before putting it out in the world. It’ll be worth it.

If you like my content, consider leaving me a tip on Ko-fi.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.
